Neuropil aggrecan, not perineuronal nets, closes the critical period for visual plasticity

These findings rectify long-standing models that misattribute closure of the critical period to PNNs and identify that aggrecan expressed by excitatory neurons resident in the surrounding neuropil limits visual plasticity.
