Sex-Dependent Alterations in Behavioral Development of Mice Lacking α5-Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors.

Complex neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and schizophrenia are characterized by impaired social interactions, cognitive deficits, and repetitive behaviors. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified the α5 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α5-nAChR) subunit as a significa...

α5-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors regulate state transitions in cortical networks and modulate susceptibility to epileptiform discharges

This study provides evidence for a novel cell-type-specific pathway in which α5-mediated nicotinic signaling tightly regulates state transitions in cortical networks, and reveals a critical role of α5-nAChRs in regulating cortical excitability and ictogenesis.
