Gene-rich fungus gnat germline-restricted chromosomes are largely transcriptionally quiescent.

GRCs in fungus gnats are identified as unique chromosomes, largely transcriptionally quiescent during key stages of B. coprophila development, yet capable of maintaining both endogenous and potentially horizontally acquired genes over evolutionary timescales.

The mechanistic and evolutionary diversity of programmed DNA elimination.

This work compares PDE across broad phylogenetic groups, highlighting the mechanistic diversity, overlooked plasticity in genome integrity and the considerable gaps in the understanding of why PDE emerged recurrently and is maintained across the Tree of Life.
