Macroalgal fucoidan can activate the biological carbon pump
Brown macroalgae secrete complex carbohydrate polymers, their extracellular matrix, as protection against microbial degradation, which can contribute to marine carbon sequestration, though mechanisms, extent, and timescales remain unknown.
