Prompt-Induced Waste in Coding Agents: Reasoning Structure, Tool Behavior, and End-to-End Cost A Preregistered Two-Harness Benchmark

A preregistered benchmark isolating the causal effect of prompt formulation on agent work across six open-weight reasoning models and a frontier closed model is presented, consistent with recent evidence that consequential computation can occur without an interpretable trace.

Token Reduction Is Not Cost Reduction

Effective optimization should be evaluated at the level of cost per successful task, including cache behavior, trajectory changes, and correctness rather than token counts alone, because token reduction is not a reliable proxy for cost reduction in tool-heavy coding agents.
