How clean is clean enough? Short-chain PFAS remain dominant in treated landfill leachate.

Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have emerged as ubiquitous contaminants in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill leachates due to their widespread industrial applications, environmental persistence, and the disposal of PFAS-containing waste in landfill. This study presents a multi-regional investigation of PFA...

Biomimetic silicification enhances high-molecular-weight PAH biodegradation by stabilizing microalgae-bacteria consortium under acidic stress.

High-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HMW PAHs) are persistent pollutants whose biodegradation is strongly inhibited under acidic conditions. Here, a microalgae-bacteria consortium composed of Parachlorella kessleri and Paenibacillus illinoisensis was subjected to an integrated fabrication process com...

Aging-Induced Physicochemical Changes in Petroleum- and Biobased Microplastics Influence Depolymerization and Gut Microbiota in Tenebrio molitor Larvae

Overall, aging modestly facilitated larval processing and partial depolymerization of both fossil-based and bio-based plastics, as reflected by increased plastic consumption, polymer chain scission, and surface oxidation, and enhanced the functional robustness of the larval gut microbiome.
