The 2026 cycle added a three-day module on cloud and edge computing, delivered 21 to 23 July to all 17 Fellows. Each day paired a two-hour lecture with a one-hour hands-on workshop, and one scenario ran across all three days: a real-time flood early-warning system built from a network of USGS stream gauges.Day 1, Cloud. Utility computing, service models, containers, storage, cost, and the hydrologic archives that already sit in cloud object storage.Day 2, Edge. Bandwidth, power, and latency in the field, on-device detection, adaptive sampling, and model compression.Day 3, Hybrid. Five patterns that combine the two layers, an MQTT message bus, sensor fusion, and graceful degradation.Every session ran in a browser on a shared Jetstream2 JupyterHub funded by 200,000 NSF ACCESS credits. No Fellow installed software locally, and the three afternoon workshops together cost about one hundred credits.
This publication proposes a definition and a classification of agile software development approaches and analyses ten software development methods that can be characterized as being "agile" against the defined criterion.

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

The results indicate that software engineering work practices are chosen opportunistically, adapted and configured to provide value under the constrains imposed by the startup context.

The perception of the impact of agile methods is predominantly positive, and several challenge areas were discovered, but based on this study, agile methods are here to stay.

For decades, a fundamental question about the difficulty of computing in high-dimensional spaces has resisted proof. New research resolves this question, removing a major theoretical obstacle to understanding the efficiency of randomized algorithms used across science and computing. The Kannan–Lovász–Simonovits (KLS) conjecture was proposed in 1995. It asks whether, for a broad class of high-dimensional […] The post Solving a 31-year-old grand challenge in mathematics – the KLS conjecture appear…
