Effect of Organic Mulching on in-situ Soil Moisture Conservation, Yield, and Yield Attributes of Soybean (Glycine max (L). Merrill) in the Semi-arid Areas of Western Tigray, Ethiopia

Abstract

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is widely cultivated in tropical, subtropical, warm temperate and semi-arid regions. However, its productivity remains low because of several biotic and abiotic constraints. Soil moisture stress is a major abiotic constraint that causes extensive losses in soybean production. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of organic mulching on soybean productivity and in situ soil moisture conservation. The study was conducted at Humera Agricultural Research Center during the 2020 main cropping season under rainfed conditions using a randomised complete block design with three replications. Five mulching rates (no mulch, 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1, 15 t ha-1 and 20 t ha-1) were considered as treatments, and the Hawassa-95 soybean variety was used. The results showed that the highest soil moisture was conserved under 20 t ha-1 mulch at all soil depths (0-0.2 m, 0.2-0.4 m and 0.4-0.6 m) during 15-90 days after sowing. Likewise, the highest hundred-seed weight (11.69 g), grain yield (1611 kg ha-1) and harvest index (38.48%) were recorded under the 15 t ha-1 mulch treatment. Although 15 t ha-1 mulch cover had positive effects on soil moisture conservation and soybean production, the economic analysis showed that 10 t ha-1 was the most profitable treatment, with a marginal rate of return of 706%. Therefore, farmers are advised to apply 10 t ha-1 mulch to improve soybean production and profitability.

Effect of in-situ Soil Moisture Conservation Measures on Growth Parameters and Yield of Rain-fed Sorghum in Gash Barka, Lowlands of Eritrea

Background: Rainfall variability and limited soil-moisture availability are major constraints to rain-fed crop production in the semi-arid lowlands of Eritrea. Improving in-situ soil moisture conservation is therefore important for enhancing sorghum productivity and water-use efficiency under these water-limited condit...

Plastic film mulching amplifies yield resilience and stabilizes water use efficiency of winter wheat across wet and dry years on the semi-arid Loess Plateau.

BACKGROUND Mulching is usually evaluated on multiyear average yield, which hides how its benefit varies with rainfall. A three-year split-plot experiment at Tianshui, Gansu, on the semi-arid Loess Plateau crossed four fertilization levels (no fertilizer, CK; sheep manure, M; mineral, NPK; manure plus NPK, MNPK) with th...

Irrigation Level Effects on Herbage Yield and Nutritive Quality of Forage Soybean ( Glycine max (L.) Merr.): A Multivariate and Predictive Modelling Approach for Water‐Limited Environments

This study was conducted to determine the effects of five irrigation levels, corresponding to 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 125% of the weekly irrigation amount required to replenish the effective root zone to field capacity (IT 25 –IT 125 ), on the herbage yield and quality of forage soybean ( Glycine max (L.)...

Assessment of Systems of Rice Intensification (SRI) Principles on ROK-34 Growth and Yield Under Rainfed Conditions in Moyamba District, Sierra Leone

Climate variability, declining soil fertility, and diminishing effectiveness of conventional agronomic practices increasingly constrain rice (Oryza sativa L.) production in Sierra Leone. The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is an alternative that is resource-efficient, but empirical evidence on its performance with...

Influence of Crop Rotation and Nutrient Inputs on Soil Properties and Wheat Yield of the Sloping Agricultural Lands in the Plateau Bârlad

Crop rotation and fertilization are two of the most important agrotechnical measures that influence the chemical properties of the soil and its capacity to support stable agricultural production, especially in areas affected by erosion and climate change. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of crop rota...

Effect of primary tillage on soil fertility indicators and productivity of sunflower hybrids under insufficient moisture conditions in the Lower Don region

Sunflower is the main oilseed crop in the Rostov Region. Since the sown area under this crop is limited to no more than 15% of arable land, the study of primary tillage methods is of particular relevance. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of primary tillage on soil condition, yield structure component...
