Abstract

We consider positive weak solutions of $-\Delta_p u=f(u)$, with $f$ positive and locally Lipschitz continuous. In the singular case $1<p<2$, the Harnack-type inequalities, the strong maximum principle for the linearized operator, the description of the critical set and the strong comparison principle established by Damascelli and Sciunzi [Calc.\ Var.\ Partial Differential Equations \textbf{25} (2006), 139--159] have been available, for more than twenty years, only under the restriction $\frac{2N+2}{N+2}<p<2$, a range that shrinks to the empty set as $N\to\infty$. We remove the dependence on the dimension and prove all of these results for $\frac32<p<2$. Since the strong comparison principle is used as a black box throughout the qualitative theory of $p$-Laplace equations, the improvement propagates. We show in particular that the assumption $\frac{2N+2}{N+2}<p<2$ may be replaced by $\frac32<p<2$ in the resolution of Gibbons'conjecture for $-\Delta_pu=f(u)$ by Esposito, Farina, Montoro and Sciunzi [Math.\ Ann.\ \textbf{382} (2022), 943--974] and in their monotonicity theorem in half-spaces for changing-sign nonlinearities [Calc.\ Var.\ Partial Differential Equations \textbf{61} (2022), art.\ 154]; further applications are given in the body of the paper.

Comparison principles and symmetry for subquadratic fractional $p$-Laplacian equations

This paper establishes a new comparison principle framework for the subquadratic fractional $p$-Laplacian, i.e.~$1<p<2$ under minimal regularity assumptions, that has remained a significant challenging issue due to the singularity of the operator. Our results provide the essential analytical tools required for the movi...

Gradient estimates for the fractional $p$-Laplacian in the superquadratic regime

We establish gradient potential estimates for solutions obtained as limits of approximations (SOLA) to the fractional $p$-Laplace equation with finite signed Radon measure data. Under the assumptions $n\ge2$, $p>2$, $0p-1$, every SOLA belongs to $W^{1,p-1}_{\mathrm{loc}}$, and its weak gradient satisfies a Wolff potent...

Critical $p$-Laplace equations with monotone coefficients: Liouville classification and a Schoen-type Harnack inequality

We investigate positive weak solutions of the critical $p$-Laplace equation $$ -\Delta_p u = u^{p^*-1} h(u), \qquad 1<p<n, $$ where $h$ is a positive, bounded, continuous, and nonincreasing function. Our first main result is a complete classification of normalized, bounded, positive entire solutions for every equation...

The $m$-Laplace equation with a gradient term II: classification in the second critical case

Let $1<m<n$ and $0<q<m-1$. We classify positive, locally bounded weak solutions of \[-\Delta_m u=u^p|Du|^q\quad\text{in }\mathbb R^n,\qquad p=\frac{m-q}{n-m}\left(n+\frac{q}{m-1-q}\right)-1.\] Every solution is constant or belongs to an explicit family of radial solutions, up to translation and scaling. No global bound...

Gradient H\"older regularity for singular fractional $p$-Laplace equations

Let $n\ge2$, $1p-1$. We prove that every globally bounded fractional $p$-harmonic function is locally $C^{1,\alpha}$ for some $\alpha=\alpha(n,p,s)>0$. This settles the open problem of interior gradient H\"older regularity in the singular range throughout the natural first-order regime $sp>p-1$. The proof combines an a...

Maximal Regularity and Existence for Superquadratic Parabolic Hamilton--Jacobi Equations: The Endpoint case

We establish interior maximal $L^{q_c}$-regularity for bounded strong solutions of $u_t-\Delta u+|Du|^\gamma=f$ in $\mathbb{T}^d\times(0,T)$, where $d\geq 2$, $\gamma>2$, and $q_c=(d+2)(\gamma-1)/\gamma$. The estimates are uniform for uniformly bounded families of solutions whose source terms range over a bounded, unif...
