Abstract

As-extruded Mg-6Al-1Zn-0.5Cu and Mg-6Zn-0.5Cu alloys with comparable strength were prepared, and their dissolution behaviors in KCl solutions with different Cl − concentrations were investigated for use as fracturing balls. The results of electrochemical and immersion tests consistently demonstrated that Mg-6Al-1Zn-0.5Cu alloy exhibited superior corrosion resistance across all tested environments. Specifically, in 1 wt.% KCl, it displayed a lower corrosion current density (1.28 × 10 –4 A/cm 2 ) and weight loss (19.2 mg/cm 2 /d). This superior performance was attributed to its finer grains, smaller galvanic potential differences, and more stable oxide film. Furthermore, a strong dependence on Cl − concentration was established, with higher Cl − levels accelerating corrosion. This research provides insight into the microstructure-corrosion relationship and offers guidance for material selection, recommending Mg-6Al-1Zn-0.5Cu alloy for fracturing balls across a wide range of Cl − environments during the initial stage of hydraulic fracturing.

Synergistic effects of Zn content and solution treatment duration on the corrosion behavior of highly alloyed Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys

Highly alloyed Al–Zn-Mg-Cu alloys with elevated Zn contents are promising candidates for next-generation ultra-high-strength structural applications. In this work, five Al–Zn–Mg–Cu-Zr alloys containing 8–12 wt.% Zn were fabricated, and two solution treatment durations (1 h and 2 h) were employed to investigate their ef...

Electrochemical and immersion corrosion behaviour of TNZT-xSi-yMn/Fe/Zn composites for biomedical applications

The present study investigates the effects of low-cost alloying elements (Si, Mn, Fe, and Zn) on the corrosion behaviour, ion release, and surface characteristics of β-type Ti-35Nb-7Zr-4Ta (TNZT) composites for biomedical implant applications. TNZT-xSi-y (Mn/Fe/Zn) composites, where x = 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 wt.% and y...

Optimizing SiC Content for Enhanced Corrosion Resistance in Al-5%Cu Alloys Fabricated by Powder Metallurgy

Aluminum–copper (Al–Cu) alloys reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC) are attractive for marine applications, yet their corrosion behavior is reported inconsistently in the literature: SiC has been described as both a physical barrier and a galvanic catalyst, depending on its content and distribution. To clarify this, t...

Study on the Microstructure, Wear, and Corrosion Resistance of W, Ni, and Co-Doped Fe-Alloys Processed by Solid-State Sintering

Iron-based alloys with compositions Fe 3 CWNi, Fe 3 C10WCo, and Fe 3 CWNiCo were synthesized by solid-state sintering at 1400 °C. This study investigates how additions of nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and tungsten (W) enhance the microstructure, wear resistance, and corrosion behavior of the prepared alloys. Micros...

Experimental investigations on the corrosion behavior of Al–Mg/B4C composites synthesized via powder metallurgy

The goal of this project was to investigate the microstructure, hardness as well as corrosion behavior of Al - 4% Mg metal matrix composites containing boron carbide (B₄C) particles at different weight fractions (3, 6, and 9 wt.%). Composites were produced through powder metallurgy by compacting, sintering and characte...
