Sub-Microsecond Deterministic Inference Processor via 3D Heterogeneous Integration of Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Acoustic Resonators on 28nm eRRAM/SOT-MRAM CMOS

Sep 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

Modern deep learning accelerators (GPUs, TPUs) are fundamentally constrained by the von Neumann memory wall: over 90% of total inference energy and latency is consumed by shuttling high-precision matrix weights across off-chip memory hierarchies (HBM3e, GDDR6) rather than executing arithmetic operations. Furthermore, autoregressive next-token prediction incurs non-deterministic execution times scaling linearly with context length (O(N)), preventing hard real-time deployment in mission-critical robotics, aerospace, and deterministic edge computing. We present the architectural blueprint and tape-out specification for the Morpho-Silicon 3D-IC Processor, a non-von Neumann heterogeneous compute-in-memory (CIM) engine that achieves end-to-end deterministic deduction latencies of tau_deduct < 1.5 us at a steady-state thermal design power (TDP) of 18.4 W. The device integrates two heterogeneous physical tiers connected via high-density sub-2 um Copper-to-Copper Direct Bonding Interconnects (Cu-Cu DBI):1. Tier 1 (Acoustic Correlator Plane): A 400 nm single-crystal Thin-Film Lithium Niobate on Insulator (TFLN / LNOI) layer hosting interdigital transducers (IDTs) that excite high-frequency Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW, f0 ~ 2.4 - 5.0 GHz). Analog vector routing and causal matching occur natively in the acoustic wave domain via phase interference, yielding constant-time (O(1)) deduction without digital arithmetic.2. Tier 2 (Non-Volatile CIM Substrate): A 28 nm Fully Depleted Silicon-On-Insulator (FD-SOI) CMOS base tier embedding hybrid non-volatile memory crossbars: multi-level embedded Resistive RAM (eRRAM, 1T1R) storing invariant ontological weight structures, and sub-nanosecond Spin-Orbit Torque Magnetoresistive RAM (SOT-MRAM) for zero-static-power dynamic activation. Measured against the C1-C5 physical falsification protocol, the design achieves a perfect score of 8.0 / 8.0. Inter-channel acoustic crosstalk is suppressed below -41.2 dB, and energy efficiency exceeds 48.6 TOPS/W. The processor is 100% tape-out ready using existing commercial wafer-on-wafer (WoW) fabrication pipelines (TSMC 28nm + Soitec Smart Cut LNOI).

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

Solving a 31-year-old grand challenge in mathematics – the KLS conjecture

For decades, a fundamental question about the difficulty of computing in high-dimensional spaces has resisted proof. New research resolves this question, removing a major theoretical obstacle to understanding the efficiency of randomized algorithms used across science and computing. The Kannan–Lovász–Simonovits (KLS) conjecture was proposed in 1995. It asks whether, for a broad class of high-dimensional […] The post Solving a 31-year-old grand challenge in mathematics – the KLS conjecture appear…
