TL;DR

This study considers if statements as they comprise some of the semantically simplest compound statements in Python, to provide an overview that goes deeper and beyond mere frequency statistics, together with noteworthy examples of student errors that may further guide the development of automated systems.

Abstract

There is a large research body on programming errors, which, however, is mostly concerned with Java and of limited applicability to Python. In particular, Python’s syntactic structure differs significantly from Java’s, with blocks delineated by indentation as a major hallmark, say. In order to focus on issues that are structurally different from existing work in Java, our study considers if statements as they comprise some of the semantically simplest compound statements. Based on a dataset with over 700 000 error messages in Python, we sampled errors in relation to if statements and qualitatively studied their nature, structure, and what kind of issues seemed most difficult for students to resolve. The focus on a single type of program structure allows us to provide an overview that goes deeper and beyond mere frequency statistics, together with noteworthy examples of student errors that may further guide the development of automated systems.

Goanna: a novel approach for automated type error debugging

Goanna is introduced, a novel type checker for Haskell that focuses on improving error diagnostics, and shows performance constraints when diagnosing large programs containing complex errors, but remains responsive enough to provide real-time debugging assistance for small to medium-sized programs.

A Comprehensive Study of Native Code Bugs in Python Applications

The impact of Python applications has been evidenced by their widespread presence in some of the most impactful software domains, such as machine learning frameworks and scientific computing platforms. These applications often integrate native code components written in a lower-level programming language like C. This m...

Evaluating and Improving Syntax Error Diagnostics in Modern Programming Languages

Syntax errors come up a lot when someone is trying to compile code. The messages a compiler or interpreter shows are one way the system tells the user what went wrong. These warnings and errors are part of how syntax analysis is reported back to the programmer. This work compares how three tools report syntax errors. T...

Beyond the Traceback: Using LLMs for Adaptive Explanations of Programming Errors

While LLM-rewritten messages significantly improved subjective evaluations, with pragmatic messages rated as clearer and less cognitively demanding, these perceived gains did not translate into statistically significant improvements in objective debugging performance.

On the Robustness of LLMs'Internal Representation of Code Correctness

This work studies an internal signal of code correctness that is able to judge candidate solutions better than the model's token-level or stated confidence, leaving open an important question: whether it reflects a robust property of the model or an artifact of that choice.
