Abstract

The convergence of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is reshaping industrial production by combining design flexibility with real-time connectivity and intelligence. AM provides layer-by-layer fabrication that supports rapid prototyping, mass customisation, and material efficiency, while IIoT enables data-driven decision-making through sensors, connectivity, edge/cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. Their integration establishes cyber-physical ecosystems where manufacturing processes are monitored, optimised, and secured in real time. This chapter explores the fundamentals of AM and IIoT, tracing their evolution and current states. Then it examines the synergies between AM and IIoT, highlighting digital twins, adaptive process control, and blockchain-enabled security frameworks. Practical applications across aerospace, healthcare, automotive, and energy sectors are presented, followed by a discussion of reference architecture, interoperability issues, and AI/ML-driven frameworks for intelligent manufacturing. The chapter also identifies challenges and future research opportunities, including scalability, cybersecurity, and sustainable adoption, situating AM-IIoT convergence within the broader vision of Industry 5.0. Leading companies such as GE Additive, Siemens, and HP have showcased the power of AM-IIoT convergence through improved build quality, predictive maintenance, and efficiency gains. These successes demonstrate significant advances in productivity and time-to-market, yet challenges persist in interoperability, cybersecurity, and standardisation. This chapter bridges AM’s hardware agility with IIoT’s digital intelligence, describing the path to smart, adaptive, and sustainable manufacturing.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

Solving a 31-year-old grand challenge in mathematics – the KLS conjecture

For decades, a fundamental question about the difficulty of computing in high-dimensional spaces has resisted proof. New research resolves this question, removing a major theoretical obstacle to understanding the efficiency of randomized algorithms used across science and computing. The Kannan–Lovász–Simonovits (KLS) conjecture was proposed in 1995. It asks whether, for a broad class of high-dimensional […] The post Solving a 31-year-old grand challenge in mathematics – the KLS conjecture appear…
