Abstract

The determinant approximation conjecture states that for a residually finite group $G$ and a chain $G_i$ of finite index normal subgroups with trivial intersection, the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of every matrix over the group algebra $\mathbb{Q} G$ is the limit of the Fuglede-Kadison determinants of the matrix reductions from $\mathbb{Q} G$ to $\mathbb{Q} (G/G_i)$. We disprove the conjecture by exhibiting an explicit element of the integral group ring of the Heisenberg group with determinant equal to $2$ and reduced determinants bounded by $\sqrt[3]{5}$.

Bounded-orbit lattice representations of finite groups

For a finite group $G$, let $\lambda(G)$ denote the minimum number of orbits on the elements of a finite lattice $L$ with $\operatorname{Aut}(L)\cong G$. Babai and Goodman conjectured that $\lambda(G)$ is bounded by an absolute constant. We prove that $\lambda(G)\leq 50$ for every finite group $G$, thereby confirming t...

The Borovik-Cherlin conjecture holds in ACF

We show that every faithful, transitive, and generically $(n+2)$-transitive action of a connected group $G$ on an irreducible variety $X$ of dimension $n>0$, all defined over an algebraically closed field $F$, is isomorphic to the natural action of the projective linear group $PGL_{n+1}(F)$ on the projective space $\ma...

Hurwitz Equivalence of Reflection Factorizations in Types $B$ and $D$

A conjecture of Lewis asserts that two reflection factorizations of the same element in a finite Coxeter group $W$ belong to the same Hurwitz orbit if and only if they generate the same subgroup $H$ of $W$ and have the same multiset of $H$-conjugacy classes. We prove this conjecture for every finite Coxeter group all o...

On a Rank Nullstellensatz Conjecture for Noncommutative Polynomials

Jurij Vol\v{c}i\v{c} conjectured that a noncommutative polynomial $g$ belongs to the two-sided ideal generated by $f_1,\ldots,f_l$ if and only if, for matrices of every size, the rank of the evaluation of $g$ is bounded by a constant times the maximum rank of the evaluations of $f_1,\ldots,f_l$. In this paper, we show...

The Tate conjecture for abelian fivefolds over finite fields

We prove the Tate conjecture for abelian fivefolds over finite fields. The proof constructs correspondences for a residual motive using a Moret--Bailly family, Gross--Schoen heights, and monodromy. We also prove standard conjecture~$D_\ell$ over $\overline{\mathbf F}_p$ and independence of $\ell$ of rational cycle clas...

On Greenberg's conjecture for rational elliptic curves at Eisenstein primes

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, and let $p$ be an odd prime of ordinary reduction for $E$, and assume that $E$ admits a rational $p$-isogeny. In this paper we prove Greenberg's conjecture on the vanishing of algebraic Iwasawa $\mu$-invariants of the Selmer groups attached to $E$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}...
