Parameter identification of an elastic-viscoplastic model for cohesive soils using self-boring pressuremeter tests

Abstract

Cohesive soils challenge accurate parameter determination due to time-dependent behavior and sampling sensitivity. The self-boring pressuremeter test (SBPT) minimizes disturbance and offers clear boundary conditions. This study develops an efficient optimization framework to identify parameters of an advanced elastic-viscoplastic model for cohesive soils using SBPT data. Comprehensive SBPTs on Kunming peaty soil included multiple loading, strain-holding, and pressure-holding tests. Results showed significant rate-dependency in cavity pressure and excess pore pressure, resulting from both partial drainage and intrinsic viscous soil behavior. A finite element model incorporating an overstress EVP constitutive law and partial drainage was established. Sensitivity analysis revealed cavity pressure is mainly governed by overconsolidation ratio, recompression index, and Poisson’s ratio, while excess pore pressure is most sensitive to permeability, recompression index, and Poisson’s ratio. An automated optimization framework integrating the numerical model with the multi-island genetic algorithm was implemented using Python scripting. Parameters optimized from two loading-rate tests deviated notably from laboratory values—especially in compressibility—underscoring SBPT’s advantage in capturing true in-situ behavior. Using these parameters, predictions for other tests agreed well with measurements. This approach reduces subjectivity, mitigates sampling bias, and utilizes excess pore pressure from loading tests as a practical alternative to strain- holding tests for permeability determination.

Parameterization and Application of a Small-Strain Stiffness Hardening Soil Model for Coastal Soft Soils

The selection of Small-Strain Stiffness Hardening Soil (HSS) model parameters for coastal soft clays remains insufficiently established. This study aimed to determine HSS model parameters for coastal soft clays and evaluate their applicability in finite element analysis. Undisturbed soil samples from three representa...

Elastic Modulus Modelling of Soils under Deviatoric Stress-Strain Conditions

Accurate characterisation of soil elastic properties is essential for predicting deformation and soil–structure interaction under loading. Young’s modulus, shear modulus, and bulk modulus are influenced by stress state, strain level, and soil characteristics, making their behaviour site-specific and potentially nonline...

Parametric Evaluation of Key Constitutive Components in a Bounding Surface Model for Unsaturated Soils

The lack of consensus on appropriate formulations for effective stress, the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC), and the critical-state void ratio has plagued the constitutive modeling of unsaturated soils. This paper presents a numerical parametric investigation of the aforementioned modeling components using a rat...

Investigation of Stress Relaxation Characteristics of Fine-Grained Soils Based on CPT and Viscoelastic Constitutive Modeling

Stress relaxation is a common phenomenon in fine-grained soils. However, most existing studies rely on laboratory triaxial tests, with limited attention to in situ methods. In particular, the relaxation behavior under cone penetration test (CPT) conditions has not been systematically investigated. Through triaxial re...

Dynamic Mechanical Properties and Constitutive Model of Saturated Frozen Soil with Different Pore Ratios

This study investigates the dynamic stability of frozen soil slopes subjected to strong disturbances such as blasting. Dynamic compression tests were conducted on saturated frozen clay specimens using a split Hopkinson pressure bar system. The effects of strain rate (100–700 s−1), temperature (−15°C, −23°C, and −30°C...
