NUMERICAL SIMULATION AND REGRESSION-BASED PREDICTION OF ROTARY DISC CUTTER FORCES IN TBM ROCK CUTTING

Abstract

This study introduces a computational framework for estimating disc cutter forces during rotary cutting in Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), combining LS‑DYNA with a Smoothed Particle Galerkin (SPG) approach and the Riedel–Hiermaier–Thoma (RHT) material model. A total of 58 simulations were performed to examine how cutter forces vary wit radial installation position, rock strength, contact area, and cutter spacing. The results demonstrate that normal, rolling, and side forces increase with rock compressive strength and contact interface size, but decrease as the cutter’s installation radius grows. Regression analysis based on natural logarithmic transformations yielded predictive equations with high accuracy (R² = 0.80–0.91). Each fitted parameter is reported with its standard error and 95% confidence interval, ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and statistical robustness.

Prediction of Blast-Induced Backbreak Using Burden, Spacing, Powder Factor, And Geometric Stiffness

Back break, defined as rock fracturing that extends beyond the last row of blastholes into the intended final wall or the next bench, is a persistent problem in open-pit mining and quarrying that compromises slope stability, increases dilution, and raises downstream costs. This study develops an empirical multiple line...

Numerical investigation on rock-breaking performance and arrangement optimization of disc cutter with miniature spherical inserts.

The cutter with insert teeth is a critical tool for TBM rock-breaking and has been widely applied in transportation and mining tunnel construction. The arrangement of insert teeth is a key factor influencing rock-breaking performance and load characteristics. However, conventional large-insert designs suffer from stres...

Numerical simulation-based optimization of riser design and defect control for ductile iron castings

This study proposes a riser optimization framework combining numerical simulation and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to reduce shrinkage defects in ductile iron brake calipers. ProCAST analysis identified severe shrinkage at the piston cavity bottom. Orthogonal experiments showed that the riser diameter ratio (DR/T)...

Load Characteristics of Mechanical Cutters When Cutting Different Coal and Rock Formations and Entropy Features of the Samples

The load characteristics and dynamic behavior of shearer drums under complex geological conditions—particularly coal seams with gangue interlayers, roofs, and floors—remain insufficiently understood due to the lack of systematic comparative studies across varying cutting scenarios. In this study, a three-dimensional fi...

Coupled experimental-simulation approach with multi-strategy optimization in machining Nitronic-50 using MT-CVD inserts

Dry-turning has been performed on Nitronic-50 with MT-CVD inserts by employing 3-factor, 3-level parametric combinations, in compliance with a face-centered CCD approach. Experimental outcomes include cutting force ( Fz ), tool-tip temperature ( TTT ), width of worn flank ( V B ), volumetric material remov...
