This review synthesises evidence for small, secreted peptide signalling across cereal reproductive development, taking wheat as the primary system and drawing on rice and barley evidence, and proposes that these peptide systems form an overlapping regulatory network rather than acting independently.
Abstract
Yield determination in cereal crops is a sequential developmental programme spanning inflorescence meristem activity, floret survival and fertilisation, grain filling, and grain compositional quality. The classical framework for this programme centres on carbon assimilation, source-to-sink ratios, and canonical phytohormones, but does not explain how whole-plant nitrogen status is communicated to reproductive sinks during grain filling, nor how meristem size, floret fate, and nitrogen allocation are coordinated. This review addresses that gap by synthesising evidence for small, secreted peptide signalling across cereal reproductive development, taking wheat as the primary system and drawing on rice and barley evidence. We propose that these peptide systems form an overlapping regulatory network rather than acting independently. The CLV-WUS feedback loop restricts meristem size and sets the upper limit of grain number. RALF peptides enable pollen tube integrity and fertilisation success. Phytosulfokine promotes grain filling through PSKR1 signalling. CEP and its receptor CEPR1 coordinate nitrogen delivery to reproductive sinks, with cereal CEPR1 knockouts showing severe reductions in grain number and weight. IDA signalling regulates floret abscission and grain retention. Nitrogen-related pathways receive emphasis, including NAC-controlled remobilisation via NAM-B1 and CEP-CEPR1-mediated nitrogen demand signalling, given their relevance to the yield-quality trade-off. Abscisic acid integrates nitrogen status with storage protein deposition. Critical gaps include absent direct CEP evidence during grain filling, the uncharacterised CLV3-equivalent peptide at the wheat meristem, and the lack of field-scale biostimulant data. Addressing these gaps will be essential for translating peptide signalling biology into breeding strategies that improve grain number, weight, and protein content.
Increasingly frequent extreme heat events threaten cereal production and food security under a changing climate. The reproductive-to-grain formation continuum of cereals is particularly vulnerable to elevated temperatures, as heat stress disrupts developmental processes from inflorescence formation and fertilization to...

Spice crops occupy a minor share of global cropland yet underpin export earnings, smallholder livelihoods and food quality across the tropics and subtropics. Their production systems are unusually exposed to water deficit, soil salinity and temperature extremes, and their value depends on secondary metabolites whose ac...

Rhizosphere microbiomes influence nutrient use, stress tolerance, and crop performance, but the processes connecting root microbial activity to canopy function and harvest traits remain incompletely resolved. This review integrates evidence from model plants and horticultural crops through a framework of rhizosphere in...

Carbon allocation and source-sink interactions are fundamental determinants of yield, fruit quality, and climate resilience in perennial fruit crops. Unlike annual species, fruit crops must continuously distribute assimilates among reproductive, vegetative, and storage sinks, balancing current production with future gr...

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a vital global crop, contributing ∼37% of annual grain production. Enhancing yield per unit area is crucial for food security, yet research has primarily focused on single-ear traits, overlooking the regulation of double ears-a key determinant of prolificacy. While secondary ears drive yield vari...

The novel synthesis offered here repositions epigenetic regulation, specifically H3K27ac and H3K27me3 dynamics at NRT2 , GS, and storage protein loci, as a principal determinant of cultivar‐specific nitrogen use efficiency operating independently of DNA sequence variation.
