TL;DR

It is argued that, for QA-style retrieval on general-purpose natural-language corpora, chunking strategy is a low-variance factor, and that RAG benchmarks should report variance decomposition alongside absolute metrics so practitioners can allocate engineering effort to the factors that actually drive performance.

Abstract

: The RAG community devotes disproportionate attention to optimizing text chunking strategy. Through a factorial experiment crossing four chunking strategies, two embedding models, two chunk sizes, and two QA datasets (Natural Questions and MS-MARCO), we find that, in QA-style retrieval on two established datasets, choice of dataset (24–78% of variance) and embedding model (11–50%) together explain 67–89% of retrieval quality variance, while chunking strategy accounts for only 1–2% and is not statistically significant ( p > 0 . 21). An end-to-end LLM-as-judge evaluation confirms that chunking differences do not propagate to generation quality in this QA setting (Kruskal-Wallis p > 0 . 88). We argue that, for QA-style retrieval on general-purpose natural-language corpora, chunking strategy is a low-variance factor, and that RAG benchmarks should report variance decomposition alongside absolute metrics so practitioners can allocate engineering effort to the factors that actually drive performance.

When Is Complex Chunking Worth It? A Multi-Objective Evaluation of Chunking Methods at Scale

This work evaluates eight representative chunking strategies across two scalable corpora, three embedding models, and multiple corpus sizes, measuring both retrieval effectiveness and system-level costs and shows that computationally expensive methods rarely provide consistent gains over simpler chunking.

Comparing Chunking and Embedding Strategies for Turkish RAG Systems

This work compares Turkish document question answering across three chunking strategies, five embedding models, and two LLMs, over three documents with contrasting layouts, finding the faster LLM is not the more accurate one.

ChunkRank: Model-Aware Text Chunking and Abstention-Aware Answer Selection for LLM Pipelines

We present ChunkRank, an open-source Python library that derives chunk boundaries from a target model's tokenizer and context window, and selects an answer among candidates produced independently per chunk. It ships a validated registry of 90 models across 15 providers and six answer-selection methods, and needs only t...

Chunk Size and Retrieval Depth Optimization in a Minimal Retrieval-Augmented Generation Pipeline

Retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG) links a large language model to a set of texts. But RAG works well only when two settings are right: how big each piece of text (a "chunk") is, and how many pieces the model reads. People often choose these by habit, not by data. In this study we tested how both settings change the...

Effective Chunking for Retrieval-Augmented Generation over Structured Institutional Documents

Evaluating four chunking strategies for structured institutional RAG systems demonstrates that chunking strategies influence RAG objectives in distinct ways, with structure-aware chunking improving answer generation while semantic chunking more effectively preserving table integrity.

Attention Diversion explains why inference-time strategies, including chain-of-thought prompting, spell-checking, self-repair, and stronger repair models, fail to consistently recover performance: each addresses one channel at a time.
