Abstract
Payment channel networks (PCNs) have emerged as a promising solution for improving the throughput of permissionless blockchains. A key factor affecting PCN performance is routing, which aims to find feasible paths for off-chain payments. However, existing PCN routing schemes either rely on global network knowledge, which causes high overhead and low efficiency, or sacrifice path diversity, which degrades the payment success ratio. In this paper, we conduct a measurement study showing that nodes’ payment behavior exhibits strong locality and further gives rise to stable payment communities in real-world PCNs. Motivated by these observations, we propose SegFlow, a novel routing solution that leverages network partitioning to strike a desirable balance among success ratio, efficiency, and overhead. The core idea of SegFlow is to partition the PCN into multiple subnets and apply differentiated routing strategies to intra-subnet and inter-subnet payments. Specifically, we propose a network partitioning algorithm that enables most payments to be completed within subnets. We then design an inter-subnet routing mechanism that achieves a high success ratio with low overhead for payments across subnets. Extensive simulation and testbed experiments demonstrate that SegFlow achieves a high success ratio comparable to state-of-the-art PCN routing schemes, while substantially reducing overhead and improving routing efficiency.
Virtual Payment Channels (VPCs) enable efficient off-chain transactions in Payment Channel Networks (PCNs), but their performance depends on selecting high-quality underlying paths. Existing approaches either rely on simplified metrics or incur high computational cost. We study VPC path selection under generalized mono...

Blockchain technology faces scalability challenges because transactions must be validated and recorded across the network. Payment channel networks (PCNs) improve efficiency by moving transactions off-chain and recording only critical interactions on the mainnet. However, PCNs require pre-deposited channel balances (su...

Blockchains are isolated by design. Interoperability solutions connect them but differ widely in trust, cost, and security guarantees. Since no single solution connects all blockchains, end-to-end cross-blockchain communication may require composing several of them in sequence. As the number of options grows, the space...

In anycast content delivery networks (CDNs), client requests are naturally routed to the topologically closest cache server (CS) via the border gateway protocol (BGP). However, BGP routing policies frequently cause path inflation, directing clients to geographically distant servers and severely degrading delivery laten...

Cross-chain asset transfer protocols are vital for blockchain interoperability. While many focus on functionality and scalability, privacy is often overlooked. The Payment Channel Hub (PCH) addresses this by offering a centralized service that enables fast, private off-chain cross-chain transactions by obscuring user t...
