An Optimality-Theoretic Analysis of Plosive Gemination in Turkish

Abstract

This study aims to investigate if the universal principles such as geminate inalterability and integrity are applicable in Turkish geminates by utilizing an optimality theoretic analysis besides exploring dominant constraint groups. Thus, Turkish National Corpus was referred for compiling Turkish words including lexical plosive geminates. Among data composed of 106 words whose transcriptions were based on Spoken Language and Dictionary of Turkish Articulation, the most frequent seven words were selected for analysis depending on geminate consonant groups’ articulatory categories and phonological environments. The results indicated faithfulness constraints enforcing gemination integrity and protection of voicing features like GEM-Integrity and IDENT-IO[voice] dominate markedness constraints such as SHARE[front], AGREE[back], LICENSE([sg], Onset), and *[spread]/CODA controlling frontness / backness agreement of geminate consonants with their phonological environment despite the featural changes seen between geminate pairs.

Syllable Structure Variation between Two Iraqi Arabic Dialects: A Comparative Optimality-Theoretic Investigation

This study is an Optimality-Theoretic comparison of two major dialects of Iraqi Arabic: Baghdadi Gilit Arabic (BGD) and Basri Arabic (BAS), focusing on syllable structure variation. The data were collected from 20 native speakers (10 for each dialect), representing both rural and urban backgrounds, as participants in r...

Comparative Analysis of Predicate Functions in English and Central Kurdish (Sorani)

This study adopts a contrastive linguistic approach to examine the predicate functions in English and Central Kurdish (Sorani), focusing on their syntactic, morphological, and semantic characteristics. While both languages belong to the Indo-European family, they diverge significantly in structure: English follows a ri...

A Corpus-based Analysis on Pragmatic Fossilization in English Learners' Acquisition of Discourse Markers

The study aims to investigate pragmatic fossilization in English learners' acquisition of discourse markers in oral English. Pragmatic fossilization refers to the inability to completely master and apply the target language, so comparison between non-native speakers and native speakers on pragmatic competence is essent...

Reevaluating stress in Modern Standard Arabic: an Optimality-Theoretic approach

This paper presents a comprehensive Optimality Theory (OT) analysis of stress assignment in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), focusing on monosyllabic, disyllabic, and trisyllabic words. The analysis confirms the bimoraic minimality requirement, which excludes light syllables (CV) from functioning as independent words, ref...

O gradience, where art thou? Examining backness harmony in Uyghur

Abstract Discreteness of representations is a core commitment of classical generative phonology. However, one of the biggest arguments levelled against discreteness has come from the phenomenon of incomplete neutralisation – where the output of some phonological process on a feature [F] is phonetically distinct from un...

Prosodic licensing and interpretive asymmetries of shenme in Mandarin Chinese

In Mandarin Chinese, the interpretation of the wh -word shenme ‘what’ varies across surface-identical constructions, raising long-standing questions about the role of syntax and prosody in clause typing. While previous analyses have focused on syntactic ambiguity or global intonation patterns, they have not a...
