Abstract

This article examines the role of metaphors and metonymies in diplomatic discourse and emphasizes their importance not only as stylistic devices, but also as tools for understanding and forming a conceptual representation of the world. Based on an analysis of existing research in the field of cognitive linguistics and political discourse, the article highlights the characteristics of diplomatic discourse and offers a linguistic analysis of the metaphorical and metonymic models used in it. The linguistic analysis of diplomatic notes and agreements is aimed at determining their rationale. The empirical part of the study uses diplomatic texts (speeches by diplomats, official statements, diplomatic notes and agreements). The article highlights thematic groups of metaphors and metonymies used in diplomatic discourse (metaphors of war and peace, metonymic transfers) and analyses their functions: smoothing over sharp corners, forming a positive image, creating a sense of community, manipulating public opinion, influencing the decision-making process. The conclusion summarizes the research and outlines prospects for further research in the field of automatic processing of diplomatic discourse.
