An open-source GeoAI workflow for mapping historic agricultural terraces

Abstract

Abstract. Historic agricultural terraces are important cultural and geomorphic features, but their spatial distribution is often poorly documented, especially in abandoned landscapes where woodland expansion obscures terrace morphology. This paper presents a fully open-source GeoAI workflow for semi-automatic terrace mapping from high-resolution LiDAR DEMs. The protocol combines predictors derived from terrain morphology and broader landscape context within a Random Forest classification framework. Two models were compared: a benchmark model based on topographic and geomorphological variables, and an extended model incorporating potential solar irradiance, soil erodibility and least-cost corridor density as proxies for agricultural suitability, slope management and accessibility. The extended model consistently outperformed the benchmark model, achieving higher accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score and class separability, while also reducing relative overprediction and omission error. These results show that terrace detection improves when local morphology is combined with predictors that reflect human land-use choices. The workflow provides a reproducible FOSS approach for mapping both visible terraces and those preserved beneath woodland canopy, not only for supporting heritage documentation but also offering potential insights for land degradation assessment and climate adaptation strategies.

Data4Land - Reproducible Open-Source Tool for Enrichment of Land Use / Land Cover Rasters and Connectivity Maps

Abstract. Land use/ land cover (LULC) datasets derived from remote sensing are widely used in geospatial applications for environmental management, natural capital assessment, and spatial planning. However, their spatial resolution, thematic consistency, and accuracy are often insufficient for complex analyses includin...

Peatlands mapped across the European Alps with a harmonised multi-sensor workflow show widespread degradation

Alpine peatlands are disproportionately large carbon sinks and important biodiversity reservoirs, yet their small size, fragmentation, ecological heterogeneity, and limited accessibility in complex mountain terrain hamper consistent mapping and monitoring. We developed a cross-country multi-sensor workflow for dete...

High-Resolution Spatial Modeling of Permafrost Landform: Polygonal Patterned Ground in the Three-River Source Region

Polygonal patterned ground (PPG) is an important remote-sensing indicator of permafrost dynamics, yet its high-resolution distribution in alpine permafrost regions remains unknown. In this study, we developed an ensemble modeling framework to map PPG in the Three-River Source Region (TRSR), northeastern Qinghai–Tibet P...

Multisource Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis of Vineyard Wildfire Impacts and Resilience: The 2019 Kincade Fire

Working agricultural landscapes are often treated as background to wildfire disasters, even though they are managed fuel mosaics, productive assets, and parts of regional infrastructure systems. We examine vineyard wildfire resilience during the electrically initiated 2019 Kincade Fire in Sonoma County, California, usi...

Stone Wall Inventory: A Combined Remote and In Situ Approach Applied in a Protected Landscape

Stone walls are vital components of Mediterranean rural landscapes, but they are increasingly threatened by land abandonment and the loss of traditional maintenance practices. This study presents an integrated approach for detecting and mapping stone walls within the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Par...
