This paper investigates Coordinated Wh-Questions (CWQs) in Japanese, in which wh-phrases with distinct grammatical roles or syntactic categories are conjoined. Since such elements cannot be base-generated in a single position, CWQs raise the question of what is coordinated. Boskovic (2024) argues that a wh-indeterminate system is a prerequisite for wh-coordination, predicting that Japanese should allow it; existing accounts, however, derive Japanese CWQs from coordination of larger constituents such as CPs or vPs (Ishii 2014, Kasai 2016). I argue instead that Japanese CWQs involve genuine wh-coordination in a monoclausal structure. I further show that Japanese sluicing deletes the lowest complementizer Fin while retaining the Force head ka, indicating that Merchant's (2001) Sluicing-COMP generalization targets the lowest complementizer. Coordinated Sluicing accordingly divides into two subtypes: monoclausal wh-coordination when the first conjunct lacks ka, and biclausal multiple sluicing when it contains ka.
This paper examines the syntax of quantificational expressions in Chuj, a Mayan language spoken primarily in Guatemala and Mexico. Building on Royer, Buenrostro & Jenks (2026), we argue that Chuj quantifiers fall into two distinct syntactic categories. Some quantifiers function exclusively as
determiners

This paper focuses on cross-linguistic differences in the obligatoriness of wh-object fronting in wh-ex-situ languages. In English, wh-objects may generally remain in situ in echo questions, whereas in Russian the fronting of simplex wh-objects has been claimed to be obligatory in request-for-repetition echo question...
While the basic/underlying word order in Chinese languages is SVO, SOV patterns are also attested, and in Mandarin frequently arise for reasons of focus or (inner) topicalization (Ernst and Wang 1995; Paul 2005). In contrast to such optional OV, in many varieties of Wu Chinese an obligatory OV sequencing often occurs,...

Sentence coordination presents variation in Old and Middle French. We investigate two aspects of this variation: the syntactic level at which coordination occurs (CP vs. TP), and the choice between the two most common coordinating elements (et & si, both meaning ‘and’), which have been claimed to be essentially equival...

This paper argues that the overt shì in Mandarin pair-list answers functions as a discourse-anaphoric pairing predicate rather than a standard copula, or a focus marker. The relevant mapping is not created by overt shì itself, but is established by the Question under Discussion (QUD) structure, introduced explicitly by...
