Introducing the OUTOFPAPUA Database: Lexicons of the West Papuan Language Area

Sep 2026 · Oceanic Linguistics · Vol 65, pp. 353 - 388 · 0 citations · 69 references

Abstract

Abstract:This article presents the background to, and a description of, a newly developed online database of historical and contemporary lexical data for languages of the region on and around the Bird's Head of New Guinea. In the first public release described here, the OUTOFPAPUA database collects more than 200,000 lexemes for more than 400 languages/dialects; coverage will be expanded in subsequent releases. The database aims to include sources of all sizes, from short wordlists collected in survey visits to dictionaries of several thousand entries based on multiple years of linguistic work. The database is primarily designed for use in qualitative historical linguistic research, facilitating detection and tracking of cognates and loanwords across the region, but is envisaged to serve a diverse audience by providing online access to many hard-to-access sources from archives and libraries.
