Abstract
Abstract Many biomolecules and their synthetic counterparts preferentially assemble into double-helices with a preferred handedness and parallelism, such as all-antiparallel, right-handed double-helical polymorphs of DNA and RNA favored under ambient conditions by Watson–Crick duplexing. We analyze knots formed by double-helices which are exclusively all-parallel (or exclusively all-antiparallel) and all right-handed (or all left-handed) . Most simpler knot enantiomers are unrealizable. Among the nearly 500 distinct knot enantiomers with up to 10 crossings, fewer than 10% can be formed by such double-helices. Simplest designs for the folding of admissible knot enantiomers via duplexing of complementary base pairs in single-stranded RNA (or DNA) are enumerated for those knots.
Abiotic foldamers that switch between distinct, well-defined geometries are rare. Here, we report a structurally simple series of oligomers with alternating ortho-phenylene and 2,3-pyrazinylene repeat units. Deconvolution of variable-temperature 1H NMR spectra, with the help of ab initio chemical shift predictions, sho...

Communication between neighboring helical domains is central to biological function, yet dynamic interactions between distinct peptide helices remain poorly understood. Herein, we report a series of nonoverlapping doubly stapled block-type peptides composed entirely of achiral components and containing α-α, 310-310,...

RNA inverse folding asks for an RNA sequence whose prescribed secondary structure is the unique maximum-base-pair compatible fold. In the four-letter Watson-Crick model (A-U and C-G pairs only, no pseudoknots, and zero minimum base-pair span), Hales et al. introduced a separated-coloring certificate and an even-odd dev...
Helical supramolecular architectures are ubiquitous in nature yet remain challenging to construct from asymmetric achiral molecules. Here, we demonstrate that structural water acts as a symmetry-breaking and frustration-generating element in artificial self-assembly. Using an asymmetric achiral naphthalene derivative (...

Short peptides are versatile building blocks for self-assembled biomaterials due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ease of preparation. Most studies of short-peptide self-assembly involve aromatic residues such as phenylalanine or peptides containing terminal capping groups, where π-π interactions play a...

Oppositely charged polyelectrolytes are known to form polyelectrolyte complexes. Polyelectrolyte complexes are typically structurally disordered. In recent years, complexes of oppositely charged polypeptides have received increasing attention. Polypeptides provide additional interaction motifs such as hydrogen bonds an...
