Abstract
Phraseological units are an important part of the lexical composition of a language and reflect the culture, history, customs, traditions, and worldview of the people who use the language. This paper discusses the concept of phraseology, the main characteristics of phraseological units and idioms, and the principal ways in which phraseological units are formed in English. Particular attention is given to the distinction between free word combinations, ordinary combinations, phraseological groups, and phraseological combinations. The main sources of English phraseological units are examined, including individual words, free word combinations, proverbs and sayings, and calquing. The discussion emphasizes the importance of phraseological competence for effective language learning and communication.
