Innovation Of Educational Technology Management In Fostering Learner Motivation

Aug 2026 · Indonesian Journal of Innovation Studies · 0 citations

Abstract

General Background The rapid digital transformation of education has fundamentally altered pedagogical interactions and learning environments, making educational technology an essential component of modern instructional design. Specific Background The acceleration of digital integration, spanning blended learning, artificial intelligence platforms, gamification, and learning analytics, requires robust institutional management to ensure these tools effectively foster meaningful learning experiences and sustain student motivation. Knowledge Gap Although numerous studies analyze the relationship between educational technology and learner motivation, most focus narrowly on tool utility or instructional design, neglecting the critical role of systemic institutional management and the underlying psychological mechanisms governing motivation. Aims This study systematically reviews the literature from 2016 to 2026 to analyze how educational technology management determines learner motivation through the lens of Self-Determination Theory. Results Utilizing a PRISMA-compliant systematic literature review of seventy-seven studies retrieved from Lens.org, the findings categorize the literature into five main clusters: blended or online learning, platforms and artificial intelligence, gamification, theory-based studies, and learning analytics. The synthesis reveals that educational technology does not inherently increase motivation; rather, positive motivational outcomes occur only when technology is strategically managed to support meaningful interaction, provide clear feedback, and fulfill the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Novelty This research shifts the academic focus from viewing technology merely as an instructional tool to framing it as a managed educational process inextricably linked to psychological need fulfillment. Implications Educational institutions must transcend mere technological adoption and strategically manage digital learning environments to actively satisfy learners' psychological needs, thereby fostering sustained academic engagement and self-regulated learning. Highlights:  Educational technology must be strategically managed as a systemic educational process rather than simply implemented as a standalone instructional tool. Sustained learner motivation in digital environments strictly depends on fulfilling the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The integration of learning analytics provides a critical mechanism for data-driven and pedagogically responsive technological management.
