Abstract
Aliphatic polyamides are indispensable engineering materials, yet the development of chemically recyclable variants remains challenging due to their strong interchain hydrogen bonding and high crystallinity. Here, we report a monomer design strategy based on α-gem-dialkyl β-lactams that enables the controlled synthesis of nylon-3 polyamides with tunable properties and closed-loop chemical recyclability. Organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization of these monomers proceeds in a living manner at ambient temperature, affording well-defined polyamides with predictable molecular weights and narrow dispersities (Đ < 1.4). Systematic variation of the α-alkyl substituents from methyl to butyl allows precise modulation of interchain interactions, yielding polymers with melting transitions ranging from 200 to 275 °C, lying below their decomposition temperatures, and static water contact angles from 28 to 97°. This structural modification not only enables viable melt processing but also facilitates efficient closed-loop recycling through acid-catalyzed hydrolysis followed by intramolecular cyclization to regenerate the pristine β-lactam monomers. Furthermore, copolymerization with ε-caprolactam significantly reduces the hygroscopicity of commodity nylon 6. By simultaneously addressing the trade-offs among polymerization control, melt processability, property tunability, and chemical recyclability, this work establishes a versatile platform for the design of high-performance, sustainable polyamide materials.
The efficient synthesis of poly(ester amide)s (PEAs), which combine polyamide-like mechanical strength with polyester-like biodegradability, has remained a longstanding challenge. Herein, we introduce a unique coordination ring-opening transamidation copolymerization (CROTCP) mediated by a tetranuclear titanium catal...
Polyglycolide (PGA) is a leading biodegradable polyester, but controlled access to high-molecular-weight PGA remains challenging. Here, we introduce a covalent preorganization strategy that merges H-bond-mediated monomer activation and alkoxide-based chain propagation within a single molecular scaffold. Systematic vari...
The practical applications of closed-loop recyclable polymers demand monomers that are readily accessible from simple feedstocks while enabling controlled polymerization and tunable physical properties. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis of 5-phenyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one (PhDO) from methyl glycolate and styrene oxide v...

Polythioesters are gaining increasing interest due to their attractive material properties and improved end-of-life options. However, the lower ring strain of thiolactones compared to lactones limits the accessibility of polythioesters through conventional ring-opening polymerization. Thionolactone isomerization ring-o...

Entropy-driven ring-opening polymerization (ED-ROP) of macrocyclic (thio)esters offers a promising platform for chemically recyclable polymers through intrinsically reversible ring-chain equilibria, yet its broader development remains constrained by low monomer reactivity, highly dilute depolymerization conditions, and...
Radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP) has emerged as a powerful strategy for introducing degradable linkages into vinyl polymer backbones. In this study, we report an oxygen-tolerant photoinduced electron/energy transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization approach for the sy...
