Abstract
Short-chain fluorocarbon surfactants are key alternatives to long-chain fluorocarbon surfactants, while the research on their cationic formulations remains limited. This study synthesizes a novel quaternary ammonium cationic short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant (
PFH-QAC
) and enhances its performance by compounding with hydrocarbon surfactants of different ionic characteristics, including anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cationic dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC), and zwitterionic
N
,
N
-dimethyldodecylamine-
N
-oxide (OB-2). The results reveal that
PFH-QAC
exhibits excellent thermal stability, surface activity, and foaming ability. Compounding
PFH-QAC
with hydrocarbon surfactants greatly reduces the critical micelle concentration (
cmc
) of
PFH-QAC
system. Particularly,
PFH-QAC
/SDS systems exhibit strong positive synergistic interactions, with
cmc
decreased by 64.67-96.74%, leading to higher foaming ability and foam stability through electrostatic attraction. Conversely, when compounded with DTAC or OB-2,
PFH-QAC
systems show deteriorating foam performance at higher concentrations, attributed to weak intermolecular interaction or unfavorable electrostatic repulsion that leads to competitive adsorption and weakened foam films. This study provides a valuable reference for the developing cationic short-chain fluorocarbon surfactants and a practical basis for environmental-friendly foam fire extinguishing agents.
Traditional long-chain perfluoroalkyl surfactants such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) have been restricted from production and use in many countries due to their high biotoxicity, poor biodegradability, and high environmental mobility. Constructing novel fluorocarbon surfactant s...

Extremely hydrophobic fluoromonomers are highly prone to phase separation during emulsion polymerization. Overcoming macroscopic experimental limitations, this study employs all-atom molecular dynamics (AA-MD) simulations to investigate the molecular-level solubilization behavior and thermal adaptability of the novel e...

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are increasingly used to enhance the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), particularly short-chain compounds, through hydrophobic ion pairing (HIP). Here, we investigated how HIP with cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) influences the interfacial and colloidal...

Conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) have attracted significant interest for environmental remediation, particularly in removing organic dyes from water, due to their permanent porosity, chemical robustness, and extended π-conjugated frameworks. In this work, we demonstrate that cationic CPPs can be highly effective adsor...
The properties and graphene compatibility of anionic and cationic surfactant ionic liquids containing a C12 hydrophobic chain are described. The cationic surfactant ionic liquids are similar to the commercial dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and dodecylethyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), but with a modified hy...

A series of fluorine-substituent-containing sulfonated poly(arylene ether) membranes was synthesized and evaluated as proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications. Fluorinated difluoro monomers were first reacted with three different diol monomers through nucleophilic polycondensation to obtain 4FP4-series poly...
