Urban freshwater ecosystems are increasingly exposed to mixtures of pollutants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, their ecological effects remain poorly understood, especially in tropical regions with limited sanitation infrastructure. This study investigated PFAS contamination, water quality, and microbial community structure in Pampulha Lake, a tropical urban reservoir in southeastern Brazil. Spatiotemporal patterns in prokaryotic and eukaryotic diversity were assessed over a year (2022–2023) using environmental DNA metabarcoding of 16S and 18S rRNA genes by integrating taxonomic data with PFAS concentrations and water quality. Physicochemical and multivariate analyses revealed strong seasonal and spatial heterogeneity, influenced by eutrophication, hydrological variability, and pollution gradients. Among the seven PFAS detected above quantification limits, PFBS and PFOA were the most common. Prokaryotic communities showed significant correlations with PFAS, especially with sulfonated forms, while eukaryotic communities were more stable. Diversity patterns highlighted microbial community sensitivity to environmental stress. Overall, results indicate that PFAS influenced microbial assemblages, supporting their inclusion in monitoring frameworks, and eDNA was proved effective for assessing ecological risks in tropical urban reservoirs.
Urban plain river networks often suffer from ecosystem impairment due to sluggish hydrodynamics and insufficient water replenishment. This study assessed the aquatic ecosystem of the Yunxi area in Hangzhou, a river network characterized by insufficient hydrodynamics. A systematic ecological survey of phytoplankton, zoo...

Urban river ecosystems are confronting increasing pressures from emerging contaminants (ECs), yet their in situ impacts on phytoplankton communities remain poorly understood. This field-based research in an urban river system, employing amplicon and metagenomic sequencing, provides the first quantitative evidence tha...
The global rise of harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) in freshwater systems is driven by anthropogenic pressure and climate change, yet limited information exists on how these factors shape HCBs and their phycosphere-associated bacterial communities (PBCs). We examined the influence of eutrophication (nutrient co...

This study investigated the bacterial composition in surface sediments (0–5 cm) of Qingshitan Reservoir to elucidate their ecosystem functions in response to anthropogenic disturbances. Samples were collected in July 2023 from eight ecological points representing varying disturbance levels. High-throughput sequencing r...
The applicability of metagenomics as a powerful tool for assessing microbial diversity, ecological dynamics, and contamination risks in vulnerable freshwater systems is demonstrated.

While the long-term effects of reclaimed water are well-studied, its diel ecological impacts remain underexplored. Here, we conducted 24-hour high-frequency monitoring of a reclaimed-water-impacted urban aquatic ecosystem (HY) against two natural reference aquatic systems (SD and XL) to reveal diel ecological dynamics...
