Abstract
The automation of lighting systems through Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has emerged as an effective solution to improve operational efficiency and facilitate the management of educational and institutional facilities. This paper presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of an IoT-based remote lighting control system using an ESP32 microcontroller. The proposed architecture integrates a web-based user interface accessible from any device connected to the local network, wireless communication through Wi-Fi and the MQTT protocol, a custom-designed printed circuit board (PCB), and a power stage composed of relays and contactors for the safe switching of lighting circuits. The system was implemented and experimentally evaluated through functional tests that verified reliable communication between the web interface, the ESP32 controller, and the power electronics, enabling the independent control of three lighting circuits. In addition, a compact enclosure was developed to integrate the power supply, protection devices, and a manual override mechanism, thereby improving system reliability and simplifying maintenance operations. The experimental results demonstrate the technical feasibility of the proposed solution as a low-cost, modular, and scalable alternative for upgrading conventional lighting systems in laboratories, classrooms, and educational buildings. The proposed architecture provides a practical approach for integrating existing lighting infrastructures into IoT-based smart building and Industry 4.0 environments.
Results demonstrate that the smart home automation system can detect motion, light intensity, and temperature; process the data correctly; and control connected appliances effectively.
