Transforming Education Through ICT-Driven Pedagogical Practices
Abstract
The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is becoming an important catalyst in changing the nature of educational practice, as educational institutions have shifted from teacher-centred to more learner-centred, flexible and interactive learning environments. The influence of ICTs on teaching and learning in the classroom, introducing digital resources, virtual learning environments, the use of multimedia, collaborative platforms, educational applications and emerging new intelligent technologies to the classroom, will be discussed. Special attention is given to the role of technology-supported pedagogy in assisting with the development of active learning, personalised learning, collaborative knowledge building, critical thinking, creativity and learner autonomy. The paper also demonstrates the movement of the role of the teacher from information provider to facilitator, mentor and designer of technology-supported learning experiences. At the same time, individual teachers' digital competences, the institutional infrastructure, the availability of ICTs, pedagogical readiness, and the capacities of students in responsible use of digital resources are important for successful incorporation. Factors which could limit the educational potential of ICT are: pedagogical resistance, information overload, insufficient technological infrastructure and the digital divide. The study highlights the importance of ensuring the integration of technology in the context of sound pedagogical practices, and not technology for technology's sake. It asserts that to achieve meaningful integration of ICTs, there is a need for ongoing teacher development, enabling digital infrastructure, effective instructional design, and institutional support. The authors conclude that pedagogical practices and learning approaches that are supported by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and strategically implemented can help build more engaging, inclusive, adaptive and future-oriented education systems and reinforce the learning competencies to participate in an increasingly digital society.
