Findings highlight that local environmental conditions are strongly associated with lineage genetic differentiation and provide a valuable DNA barcode reference for future taxonomic, ecological, and biodiversity studies of freshwater chironomids.
Abstract
Simple Summary Neozavrelia is a genus of small freshwater non-biting midges whose species are often difficult to distinguish because of their highly conserved morphology. This study employed DNA barcoding to investigate the genetic diversity of Neozavrelia across Asia, Europe, and North America. Molecular analyses identified 26 distinct genetic lineages, revealing previously unrecognized genetic diversity within the genus and suggesting the presence of multiple putative cryptic lineages. We further evaluated the relative effects of environmental and geographic factors on genetic differentiation. Environmental variables, particularly slope, annual cloud cover, cold-season precipitation, and frost frequency, explained more variation in genetic differentiation than geographic distance alone. These findings highlight that local environmental conditions are strongly associated with lineage genetic differentiation and provide a valuable DNA barcode reference for future taxonomic, ecological, and biodiversity studies of freshwater chironomids.
Etroplus suratensis (pearl spot) is a commercially important cichlid native to South and Southeast Asia, yet its genetic variation in habitats of Karnataka has not been previously studied. This study integrates morphological and molecular approaches to examine specimens from freshwater (n=65) and brackish water (n=60)...

The results suggest that the genetic structure of C. urucurana is driven by two historical lineages, and Brazilian and Paraguayan populations are critical genetic reservoirs and should be prioritized for conservation.

Abstract
Phenotypic traits and genetic variation are fundamental for understanding biological diversity and evolutionary processes. In natural populations, phenotypic novelties are generally expected to align with genetic differentiation, establishing phenotype–genotype relationships. This pattern is evident in...

The results indicate shallow genetic structure and incomplete spatial differentiation across the species range, highlighting the importance of preserving remnant restinga habitats and maintaining landscape connectivity to safeguard genetic diversity in A. robusta and other habitat-specialist ants.

The present correspondence provides the first DNA barcode-based evidence of multiple evolutionary lineages within the freshwater garfish Xenentodon cancila across South Asia. Taxonomically validated specimens from the Ujani Reservoir, Maharashtra, India, were analyzed with 77 publicly available mt COI sequences. Phylog...

Amphipods are abundant in freshwater ecosystems, where they play a crucial role in key processes such as organic matter decomposition. However, their diversity and spatial distribution remain poorly known due to the prevalence of cryptic species. This study investigates the genetic diversity of gammarids (Gammaridae)...
