THERMAL CONSOLIDATION OF ORGANIC CLAY: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CV VIA TAYLOR’S METHOD FOR SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE

Aug 2026 · Jurnal Mitra Teknik Sipil · pp. 739-746 · 0 citations

Abstract

It is well known that the soft soil is often associated with the slow process of drainage and consolidation and ground stabilization on soft soils, especially organic clay deposits, is one of the most persistent technical problems in modern infrastructure construction projects. In this paper, the effect of elevated temperature on the coefficient of consolidation (cv) of organic clay as determined by Taylor's square-root-of-time method (t90) is studied, by comparing the oedometer test results of samples loaded under standard ambient conditions and under controlled thermal conditions. It is seen from the experimental observations that introduction of heat significantly reduces the time needed for 90% consolidation (t90) and thus yields a significantly higher cv, particularly in the initial phase of loading. These results are consistent with the broader goals of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), which include the need to implement more sustainable practices and lower site-level carbon emissions for earthwork operations while also shortening construction schedules through the use of less fuel-intensive heavy equipment.

Evaluating the Geotechnical Properties of Lateritic Soils Stabilized Using Hybridized Organic- Inorganic Materials

Structural failure is one of the major challenges in the construction industry. This study was conducted to evaluate the possibility of using agricultural waste materials, as stabilizing agents for weak lateritic soil. The soil was treated with various quantities of cement, yam peel ash (YPA), and coconut fibre ash (CF...

Experimental Investigation and ML Based Prediction of Compressive Strength of Concrete with Substitution of Coarse Aggregates by Agro-Waste under Wax and Water Curing Regimes

The rapid urbanisation of the Earth’s inhabited continents has led to the depletion of the planet’s natural aggregate reserves. In response, scientists and engineers have begun to seek out alternative construction materials that are both sustainable and capable of maintaining the structural integrity of constructed bui...

Comparative effects of selected wastes on the indices and strength properties of laterite soil

This study carried out comparative analyses of the potentials of induction furnace slag (IFS), rice husk ash (RHA) and saw dust Ash (SDA) on the geotechnical properties of the A-7-6 and CL classified laterite soil obtained from Imota, Lagos State. By these classifications, the laterite soil is a poor subgrade material...
