Design and Experimental Dynamic Evaluation of an All-Terrain Vehicle Prototype
Abstract
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are widely used in off-road transportation, recreational activities, and races, where vehicle stability and dynamic performance are essential for people's safety. This study present the design, prototype fabrication and experimental evaluation of a single-rider ATV. The frame shape, dimensions, and chassis arrangement were adapted from an existing ATV design. Autodesk Inventor was used to build the three-dimensional model, which was then reduced in scale and produced by 3D printing. The prototype was tested both on smooth and rough roads under similar environmental and recording conditions. Its motion was recorded by video, and time, vertical position, and velocity were obtained from the frames divided from the video. The results of the test on smooth road are used as a baseline for the result of the rough road test. The study therefore provides a simple, cost effective method for checking the basic dynamic behavior of an ATV prototype before more optimization method is carried out.
