Abstract
This article investigates the current state and foreseeable trajectory of artificial intelligence
(AI), focusing on its principal application domains and the governance challenges they raise. A
qualitative secondary data methodology is adopted, synthesising peer-reviewed academic literature,
industry reports, and publications by international organisations including the OECD and the World
Economic Forum, with priority given to sources published between 2018 and 2024. AI creates the
greatest value where tasks are well defined, datasets are large and accurate, and performance metrics
are clear. Across healthcare, finance, transportation, education, manufacturing, energy, and
agriculture, measurable improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and cost have been documented.
Cross-cutting risks—including algorithmic bias, privacy erosion, labour displacement, and
concentration of AI capabilities—require active governance responses. The article proposes targeted
policy recommendations at international, national, and organisational levels.
