Abstract

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is foundational to catalysis, bioenergetics, and energy conversion, yet directly observing the interplay between electronic redistribution, protonation, and solvent reorganization remains challenging. We combine femtosecond optical spectroscopy, ultrafast N K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and time-resolved X-ray solution scattering to capture the steps of a sequential PCET reaction in water with atomic-site specificity. Using a ruthenium polypyridyl model complex, we resolve the electron redistribution upon photoinduced metal-to-ligand charge transfer and subsequent ( ~ 460 ps) protonation at a ligand nitrogen, as well as the concomitant rearrangement of the first-solvation-shell. Combined with advanced electronic structure and molecular dynamics simulations, our measurements reveal a marked localization of the excited-state electron density at the protonated N site, together with a switch from N···HO to NH···O hydrogen-bonds. These results establish a multimodal X-ray framework for mechanistic insight into PCET and its control in catalysis, artificial photosynthesis, and biological energy flow. Using ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy and scattering, the authors enable atomic-site-specific observations of a sequential proton-coupled electron transfer, revealing electron redistribution and solvent reorganization following photoexcitation and subsequent protonation.

Ultrafast Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions at Unit Quantum Yield.

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions mediate essential biological energy-conversion processes, yet dynamical experiments that distinguish concerted electron/proton motion from sequential electron-transfer/proton-transfer pathways are unprecedented on ultrafast time scales. Here we report a tightly coupled...

Site-selective control of electron-induced Fe(CO)5 dissociation by hydration: a mechanistic pathway to high-purity nanofabrication.

Through first-principles simulations, this study elucidates the mechanism by which water molecules steer the electron-induced dissociation of iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)5), a key process in focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID). We demonstrate that the adsorption site of a single water molecule is a critical...

Vibrational Activation Triggers Ultrafast Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer in Single-Benzene Fluorophores

Single-benzene fluorophores (SBFs) are exceptionally light-weight quantum emitters which have recently been shown to display Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) and highly tunable dual-fluorescence that could be exploited for multiple applications. Here, we employ excited-state molecular dynamics to in...

Tracking molecular hydrogen formation from ionized water in real time

Removing an electron from a water molecule can drive its two hydrogen atoms to pair up and depart as molecular hydrogen. However, even for this elementary reaction, the route from start to finish has remained hidden because measurements have yet to follow the electronic and nuclear motion simultaneously. Combining corr...

Role of Nuclear Motion in the Ultrafast Relaxation Dynamics of Inner-Shell Vacancies in Hydrated Pyrrole

We employ real-space, real-time time-dependent density functional theory combined with Ehrenfest dynamics to investigate ultrafast intermolecular relaxation following inner-valence ionization in hydrated pyrrole. By treating nuclear and electronic dynamics on an equal footing, this approach captures their strong coupli...

Liquid-jet XPS and theoretical computations reveal solvation-driven shifts and deprotonation site in uracil.

Solute-solvent interactions are fundamental to understanding the stability, reactivity, and biological function of molecules. Spectroscopic techniques allow gaining molecular-level insights into these interactions. Here we explore the hydration of uracil, a model system for the behavior of biomolecules in an aqueous en...
