Abstract

ABSTRACT The environment impact of ordinary Portland cement and increasing plastic waste generation have advanced the search for sustainable construction materials. This study investigates the use of plastic char, generated from waste-plastic pyrolysis, as a 10% replacement for flyash in geopolymer concrete. A control mix containing 50% flyash and 50% ground granulated blast furnace slag was compared with a plastic char mix under advanced CO2 curing (0–48 hrs) followed by ambient curing to 28 days. Plastic char slightly reduced workability, with slump decreasing from 88 to 83 mm. After 12 hrs of CO2 curing, the plastic-char mix achieved a compressive strength of 57.3 MPa, only 1.38% lower than the control mix (58.1 MPa). Split tensile and bond strength results reduction. CO2 uptake increased with carbonation duration, reaching 7.23% after 48hrs. The results demonstrate that plastic char is a viable fly ash substitute in geopolymer concrete, resulting allowable mechanical performance and enhanced carbon sequestration.
