This book examines why most corporate purpose initiatives fail to improve company performance and presents a framework for making purpose operational. Drawing on a host of data and in-depth interviews with decision-makers from over thirty large corporations, it exposes that purpose generates competitive advantage only when combined with specific leadership practices at the team level, a concept it terms Purpose-Based Leadership Experience. The book introduces the CLARITY framework, identifying seven conditions that convert purpose from aspiration into operation: Commitment, Legitimacy, Autonomy, Resourcefulness, Innovativeness, Trust, and You. For each lever, the book specifies the mechanism linking purpose-based leadership to measurable outcomes, the specific blocker that prevents those outcomes from materializing, and the practices that distinguish high-performing purpose-driven organizations from those where purpose remains inert. The analysis shows that effectively deploying all seven levers can improve organizational performance by 28 to 50 percent, while poorly implemented purpose strategies can degrade performance by 30 to 40 percent.
