Abstract
Background
The application of information technology in ensuring patient safety is evident and demonstrates positive outcomes. Developing a system of measures to reduce potential risks and their consequences with the necessary resource provision and organizational support is an essential component of patient safety strategy implementation.
Aims
To present an organizational model of nursing processes management at a nursing unit of a federal traumatology center using digital technology. To prototype and bring into operation the automated system Digital nursing unit as a practical tool for implementing the patient safety strategy and ensuring continuity in the transfer of clinical responsibility.
Materials And Methods
Analysis of basic processes of nurses’ activities at the unit was conducted by using a continuous observation method. Standardized nursing process manuals and resulting documents (such as logs, reporting forms, and etc.) were developed. Detailed analysis was carried out, and traumatology center inpatients’ route (during rendering elective high-tech medical care) was mapped. Optimal organizational solutions using digital technology were suggested to enhance patient safety.
Results
Possibilities and practicability was defined, digitizing of organizational processes and documenting of nurses’ activities at the unit was carried out, automated systems Digital nursing unit, Patient follow-up checklist (real-time dashboard with patients’ unique QR-codes, identic on personal ID bands for data tablets scanning) was designed. Nurses’ working hours was regulated and optimized, patient safety control was enhanced, nursing process was personalized on the basis of automatically forming Individual patient risks matrix.
Conclusion
Organizational model of nursing processes management at a nursing unit, integration of the automated system Digital nursing unit with the functioning at the center automated system Transfer of clinical liability (inpatient clinic) and the automated system Recording of undesired events when performing medical activities and other incidents made it possible to implement personal plan of patient management. The suggested model allows detecting and anticipating potentially dangerous and threatening clinical and other events. It gives the opportunity for duty shift of doctors and nurses, other healthcare personnel, managerial personnel of clinic to receive real-time current patient information, swiftly carry out risks revaluation and correct treatment strategy.
