Abstract

This study investigates the role of home economics in promoting sustainable living practices in Lagos, Nigeria, amidst severe environmental degradation caused by rapid urbanization and ineffective waste management. The primary purpose is to develop strategies empowering residents to address these challenges effectively. Key objectives in clude evaluating current waste management practices and assessing awareness of sustainable agricultural methods. The study is guided by four research questions focusing on waste management, sustainable agriculture, energy consumption patterns, and community engagement. Employing a survey design, the research targeted households in Lagos, with a population exceeding 14 million residents. A sample of 400 households was selected using purposive sampling to ensure relevance to the study. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire consisting of 30 items, validated for content and reliability by experts, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.83. The questionnaires were administered directly to participants, result ing in a response rate of approximately 79.5%. Data analysis utilized descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Findings revealed that 37.7% of households engage in waste segregation, but only 5.7% compost organic waste. Awareness of urban gardening is high (28.3%), yet participation remains low (15.7%). Energy conservation practices are noted, but investment in renewable energy is minimal (9.4%). Recommendations include enhancing waste management education, promoting urban gardening, increasing access to renewable energy, and strengthening community engagement strategies to foster sustainable practices and improve environmental conditions in Lagos.
