Aug 2026 · East African Journal of Environment and Natural Resources · Vol 9, pp. 389-402 · 0 citations

Abstract

Rapid urbanisation has significantly increased the generation of municipal waste, posing serious environmental and public health challenges. This study focused on examining the effectiveness of solid waste management practices in achieving sustainable waste management in Kitgum Municipality. A cross-sectional research design and mixed-method approach were used in the study. Data were collected using questionnaire surveys and an interview guide from 385 respondents and 11 key informants, respectively. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics; i.e., linear regression was used to analyse the effect of existing solid waste management practices on sustainable waste management, while the effectiveness of existing solid waste management practices was analysed thematically. The results reveal that landfilling (40%) and waste collection (34%) were the main solid waste management practices; the existing solid waste management practices have a strong effect on sustainable waste management (beta coefficient of .997 at p < .01), yet the existing solid waste management practices are ineffective in addressing the waste management challenge in Kitgum Municipality. The study concludes that effective waste management can be achieved through effective policy implementation, improved service delivery, collaborative management, and a developed waste management infrastructure. Therefore, to enhance sustainable waste management, the study recommends the adoption of a holistic approach that considers environmental, social, and economic factors aligned with   Sustainable Development Goals.
