TL;DR

It is suggested that both aquatic exercise modalities produced similar cognitive responses and may contribute to maintaining cognitive performance in physically active older adults.

Abstract

Abstract: This study compared the effects of water aerobics (HIDRO) and deep-water running (DWR) on global cognition and cognitive domains in physically active older adults. This quasi-experimental pragmatic trial included 92 community-dwelling older adults allocated to HIDRO (n = 42) or DWR (n = 50). The intervention lasted 36 weeks, with two 45-minute sessions per week. Cognitive function was assessed before and after the intervention using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Data were analyzed using Generalized Estimating Equations with Bonferroni post hoc adjustment (α < 0.05). No significant time × group interaction was observed, indicating similar responses between groups. A significant time effect was found for the visuospatial/executive domain, with improvements in both groups (p = 0.007). Global cognition and the naming, attention, language, abstraction, delayed recall, and orientation domains remained stable. These findings suggest that both aquatic exercise modalities produced similar cognitive responses and may contribute to maintaining cognitive performance in physically active older adults.   Keywords: Aging. Added effects of dual-task water-based exercise on global cognition and physical performance in older women: a three-arm randomized controlled trial

Introduction Dual-task water-based exercise has been proposed to enhance attention and executive functions and yield cognitive benefits beyond conventional aquatic aerobics exercise. However, evidence remains limited and heterogeneous, as few randomized controlled trials have directly compared dual-task aquatic interve...

Multicomponent training versus elastic-band training for improving global cognition and executive function in older women: a randomized controlled trial

To compare the effects of multicomponent training (MCT) and elastic-band training (EBT) on global cognition and executive function in older women. This single-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted over 16 weeks and included two supervised 60-min sessions per week. Twenty-six older...

Training executive control and multitasking abilities in older adults: training gains and transfer effects of an online pilot randomized controlled trial

Developing meaningful and effective cognition-oriented treatments to enhance cognition and dementia prevention is a major public health need. This online randomized controlled trial assessed the effects of a new web-based cognitive training platform, the Breakfast Game (BG), which simulates real-life executive control/...

Gray matter volume moderates the effect of acute physical activity on cognitive load and relates to reading comprehension in adolescents: the Cogni-Action Project

Acute physical activity reduces cognitive load (CL) and improves reading comprehension; however, the role of gray matter volume in these effects is unknown. This study examined how gray matter volume moderates the effects of physical activity on cognitive load, and explored its association with reading comprehensio...
