Abstract
Recent studies in the perception of visual illusions as well as mental imagery indicate that adjustments of the eye pupils reflect the perception instead of the light input stimulating the eyes. The present study put to test the expectation that similar adjustments of the eye pupil and, possibly, of other oculomotor responses like vergence, would be triggered by the stereokinetic effect, that is, illusory depth. In an eye-tracking study, both gaze direction and pupillary changes were measured while observers viewed "rotoreliefs,"' that is, rotating two-dimensional patterns, that are known to generate a particularly strong impression of depth. Rotoreliefs can be multistable, and in some cases their perceptual interpretations alternate between seeing either a bump or a hole, protruding or extending beyond the screen. We found strong evidence that pupil diameters were larger when the depth illusion was that of a hole (funnel) than of a bump (cone). Additionally, eyes diverged a few seconds after observers reported a reversal from a bump to a hole. Thus, the eyes adjust spontaneously to what looks like a three-dimensional form, regardless of whether this is an illusion or a veridical perception. We propose that such oculomotor adjustments to illusions index the disambiguation of visual input that optimizes possible interactions with external objects in a dynamic 3D world.
The flashed face distortion effect (FFDE) is a visual illusion in which faces presented rapidly in the visual periphery appear grotesquely distorted. Previous studies have suggested that the FFDE may involve higher-level mechanisms of face perception that integrate information across temporally and spatially adjacent s...

We investigated the robustness of the glare illusion across variations in visual clarity and stimulus size using pupillary responses as an objective physiological measure. In Experiment 1, visual acuity was manipulated through vision correction, and five stimulus sizes were presented to examine how vision condition inf...
Summary The mirror box illusion creates a visual-proprioceptive conflict in which an observer’s hidden hand feels like it occupies the position of their other hand’s viewed reflection. We used this illusion to explore the temporal dynamics of multisensory conflict resolution, recording perceived hand position repeatedl...

Recent studies suggest forms of unconscious processing in classical insight problem solving. In particular, the unconscious analytic thought (UAT) approach speculates that the creative act of restructuring such very demanding problems implies a form of high-level unconscious thought, mainly active during incubation. Th...

Hand redirection is a visuo-haptic illusion in virtual reality, introducing an offset between the virtual and real hand position. The detection of this illusion is typically attributed to the magnitude of visuo–proprioceptive conflict (VPC). In this work, we investigate how online correction processes and proprioceptiv...
