The Impact of Social Platforms on Cultural Transmission: A Study of the " Rednote Refugees" Phenomenon

Jun 2026 · Communications in Humanities Research · 0 citations

Abstract

This paper investigates the sudden influx of "TikTok refugees" to Rednote platform in early 2025 following the ban of TikTok in several countries. It analyzes the user behaviors and cross-cultural dynamics that emerged during this digital migration and subsequent socialization process. The study first examines the contradictory yet symbiotic relationship between refugees' forced displacement and their active efforts to establish roots on a new platform. It then explores how Rednote facilitates this transition through open registration policies and the rapid deployment of translation tools. Furthermore, the paper discusses how both refugee and local user groups achieve social satisfaction through information exchange and emotional resonance, extending the platform's entertainment attributes into the realm of intercultural communication. Finally, it analyzes the commercial opportunities and cultural challenges—such as cultural discount due to linguistic differences—that arise from this user influx. The findings indicate that Rednote refugee phenomenon represents a complex process of cross-cultural re-socialization, demonstrating that user interaction on social platforms can significantly impact cultural transmission. This study concludes by discussing the implications for platform governance and the future of digital cultural exchange.

The Role of Social Media in Building Global Solidarity: A Literature Review of Transnational Social Movements

The development of social media in today’s fast-paced and sophisticated era has created an important space for cross-border interaction. Such dynamics often give rise to the idea that digital platforms have an important impact in building global solidarity, especially transnational social movements. This study aims to analyze the role of social media as a flexible medium for cross-border struggles in solidarity. The research method used by the researcher is a literature review, primarily utilizing secondary data from various scientific-academic publications, NGO (Non-Government Organization) reports, and case analyses based on relevant documentation. This approach focuses on patterns in digital communication and online mobilization strategies, and their impact on social movement solidarity. The research assumption shows that social media not only accelerates the dissemination of information but also strengthens collective identity among interconnected global communities. However, there are several challenges, such as issue fragmentation, digital access inequality, and the risk of commodification, which can weaken the effectiveness of movements. In conclusion, social media plays a central role in building global solidarity and presents certain limitations that can be anticipated.

STATE DIGITALIZATION AND PLATFORM WORK AMONG MIGRANTS IN BRAZIL: OPPORTUNITIES OR TRAPS?

The study addresses the transformations brought about by platform capitalism in Brazil—both at the state level and in migrants' lives—following the introduction of digital technologies. It discusses the theoretical daily challenges faced by state agencies in integrating sophisticated digital systems into their operations while maintaining standards of cybersecurity, interoperability, and interconnection. Furthermore, it highlights the positive and negative consequences that digitalization brings to migration governance and the relationship between government and society, particularly regarding personal data privacy and security, given the heightened vulnerability of migrants. The paper characterizes the contemporary transnational nature of diasporas, wherein migrants experience a "double presence" by acting simultaneously locally and transnationally, and demonstrates how these processes intersectionally affect their subjectivities. The existing digital divide and the barriers migrants face in accessing these technologies are also illustrated. Methodologically, this is a qualitative, exploratory study consisting of a narrative-based, critical review of the academic literature and other relevant sources. Its main findings include a description of the radical changes in work organization generated by digitalization, how labor becomes precarious, and the ill-defined role of so-called "autonomous workers" within platforms, exemplified through a detailed analysis of platform drivers and delivery workers.

Negotiating Identity Through Language: A Sociolinguistic Study of Pakistani Youth Discourse on Social Media

This research investigates the strategies adopted by the users of Gen Z in Pakistan for creating digital identity through translanguaging, slang, using emojis, hashtags and app vernaculars on Instagram, TikTok and X (previously Twitter). The analysis of 250 public digital artefacts demonstrates that young people use a mix of Urdu, English, Roman Urdu and regional languages to enact belonging; to humour; to position themselves within class; to express gendered meanings; and to social critique. The study is based on the Translanguaging Theory and Multimodal Discourse Analysis and adopts a qualitative digital sociolinguistic approach with the aid of NVivo-assisted thematic coding. Results show that the young use flexible multilingual products to balance transnational digital culture and regional affiliation. Micro-analysis of the comments and digital texts reveals that the multimodal semiotic tools are functioning for negotiating the social situation and for enacting subtle resistance to the institutional norm. To sum up, the study proposes that the communication of social media has transformed the new forms of sociolinguistic practices in which the digital space becomes a place of interaction where meaning and identity is constantly being negotiated.

THE NEW AVENGERS: THE ROLE OF SOCIAL JUSTICE AND TEAMWORK IN DIGITAL ACTIVISM – A LITERATURE REVIEW

ABSTRACT Obstacles to channeling conventional political aspirations and the prevalence of systemic discrimination in the public sphere are the background to this article. These issues trigger sociopsychological alienation, which drives the emergence of independent collective movements in cyberspace. The main focus of this theoretical study is to comprehensively explore the central role of social justice and teamwork in mapping the phenomenon of digital movements driven by a new generation of activists called The New Avengers. The research steps were carried out using a narrative literature review method that adopted the selection principles of the PRISMA framework. The secondary data screening procedure systematically synthesized twenty original scientific articles from Scopus, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar databases published over the past ten years. Thematic synthesis-based research findings indicate that the principle of social justice serves as a core motivation and fundamental goal of the movement. Digital platforms have proven to provide powerful tools for narrative amplification, fostering solidarity among marginalized groups, and coordinating collective action in real time. The main conclusion emphasizes that although cyberspace offers freedom of expression, the success of digital activism is heavily influenced by cyber structural barriers, the threat of antagonism, and the repressive dynamics of authoritarian networks. Activists are recommended to draft a strategy to strengthen critical media literacy and inclusive collaborative ethics to ensure the sustainability of the impact of social change.

The Transformation of The Government's Digital Political Communication: A Study of The Relationship Between The Indonesian Communications Agency and Homeless Media

This study examines the integration of government political communication with digital media platforms, focusing on the role of homeless media accounts and counter-narratives in shaping public perceptions. The research highlights how government programs, traditionally delivered through formal and bureaucratic channels, are now repackaged into digital content such as short videos, infographics, memes, and pop culture elements to align with social media algorithms. Using a case study of 40 homeless media accounts announced under INMF, this study analyzes how 27 of these accounts provide counter-narratives “statements of attitude” to quickly influence public discourse, generate speculation, and challenge dominant narratives. The findings reveal that immediacy, diversity of cues (visual, audio, textual), multilingual communication (Indonesian and English), and direct personal interactions are key factors enhancing audience engagement and political communication effectiveness. From a programmable politics perspective, these results illustrate the government’s increasing reliance on platform mechanisms and digital engagement logic, emphasizing the shift from top-down, bureaucratic communication to participatory, digitally mediated communication. The study contributes to understanding how digital media reshapes political communication, public perception management, and symbolic resistance through social media, providing practical insights for government communication strategies in the digital era.
