Developing a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory for Linear Functions Through Collaborative Mathematical Modeling

Jul 2026 · Journal of Mathematics Education and Science · Vol 9, pp. 150-166 · 0 citations

Abstract

Students still encounter difficulties in understanding linear functions, particularly when they are required to connect contextual situations with mathematical forms and to understand variables, constant change, and symbolic representations. This study aims to develop and describe students' learning trajectory in learning linear functions through a collaborative mathematical modeling approach using the context of a leaking faucet. This study employed a design research method consisting of three stages: preparing for the experiment, conducting the design experiment, and performing retrospective analysis. The participants were eighth-grade junior high school students grouped heterogeneously according to their mathematical ability. The learning design was structured based on six stages of mathematical modeling. The results indicate that the leaking-faucet context helped students understand the relationship between time and water volume as a linear function. Students were able to identify the problem, formulate assumptions, conduct experiments, construct a model, evaluate the model, and apply it to estimate losses caused by water leakage. Therefore, a learning trajectory based on collaborative mathematical modeling can support students' understanding of linear functions.

DESIGNING A HYPOTHETICAL LEARNING TRAJECTORY USING THE PINEHALA CUSTOMARY SANCTION CONTEXT TO FOSTER STUDENTS' UNDERSTANDING OF ALGEBRAIC FACTORIZATION

Mathematics instruction in digital classrooms has not fully utilized digital technologies and is often delivered abstractly without meaningful real-world contexts, particularly in teaching algebraic factorization, a topic widely perceived as difficult by students. Therefore, this study aimed to design a Hypothetical Le...

A Mathematical Model for Teacher–Student Interaction and Student Learning Dynamics

The interaction between teachers and students is an important determinant of learning outcomes and the overall effectiveness of an education system. In this paper, we formulate and analyse a nonlinear ordinary differential equation model to study the dynamics of teacher–student interaction and student learning. The stu...

The Gauss-Jordan Method as a Representation Framework for HOTS in Rotational Dynamics

Developing higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in physics requires learning experiences that encourage students to construct mathematical representations rather than rely solely on procedural problem solving. Although the Gauss–Jordan method has frequently been introduced as a computational technique for solving system...

Mapping Undergraduate Students' Misconceptions and Their Developmental Trajectory in Fundamental Concepts of Complex Analysis

Purpose: Conceptual understanding is fundamental in Complex Analysis because students must coordinate algebraic, geometric, and polar representations to construct advanced mathematical concepts. However, existing studies have primarily focused on identifying students' errors rather than explaining how misconceptions de...
