Abstract

At the present time, quite a large number of strategies are being considered in the field of bone tissue treatment and repair for various diseases and injuries. Biomimetic scaffolds are the most frequently mentioned at the moment, and they are also one of the most promising strategies in the field of bone tissue engineering. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂), as one kind of bioceramic materials, has attracted much attention to biomimetic scaffolds due to its excellent biocompatibility, high mechanical strength and great chemical stability. In addition, zirconium dioxide is highly inert, so that it does not trigger an immune response when introduced into the host. There have been many studies on the characterization and application of zirconia-based biomimetic scaffolds. However, there are few works that can provide a systematic comparison and review of the research progress of zirconia-based biomimetic substrates. This review focuses on the properties and preparation of ZrO₂ and ZrO₂-based composites. In addition, the roles of ZrO₂ within the material itself in combination with other materials as scaffolds for bone repair are highlighted. The cases where ZrO₂ is a component of a more complex system, its relationships within such systems, and the benefits derived from the increased complexity of the component composition are discussed in the most detail. At the same time, the limitations of the material are discussed. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.
