Abstract

The use of agro-industrial by-products in ruminant diets has increased as a strategy to improve the sustainability of livestock production systems. This study evaluated the biological feasibility of replacing soybean meal with dried distillers’ grains with solubles (DDGS) at a practical dietary inclusion level in feedlot lamb diets. Twenty-four Santa Inês ewe lambs (27.08 ± 2.89 kg initial body weight) were assigned to a completely randomized design with two dietary treatments: a control diet without DDGS and a diet containing 6.27% DDGS (dry matter basis). The experimental period consisted of 21 days of dietary adaptation followed by 52 days of evaluation. Productive performance, feed intake, feed efficiency, in vivo carcass traits, parasitological indicators, hematological variables, and serum biochemical parameters were evaluated. Dietary inclusion of DDGS did not affect average daily gain, final body weight, body condition score, Longissimus muscle area, backfat thickness, dry matter intake, feed conversion ratio, or feed efficiency (p > 0.05). However, lambs fed the DDGS diet showed lower dry matter intake relative to body weight (p = 0.021). Parasitological indicators, including eggs per gram of feces, Famacha© score, and packed cell volume, were not affected by dietary treatment. Most hematological and serum biochemical variables were also unaffected. Lambs fed the DDGS diet exhibited lower leukocyte and neutrophil counts (p < 0.05), whereas serum urea concentration was higher (p = 0.035), likely reflecting the higher dietary crude protein content. Overall, replacing soybean meal with DDGS at a commercially relevant inclusion level maintained productive performance, carcass characteristics, and the evaluated hematological and serum biochemical indicators in feedlot lambs under intensive tropical production conditions.

PS9-14. Effect of Dietary Flaxseed Inclusion on Meat Quality Traits of Texel-crossbred Lambs Finished in Feedlot.

The inclusion of oilseeds in feedlot lamb diets may represent an alternative to partially replacing cereal grains by providing lipids as an energy source instead of starch. Supplementing sheep with oilseeds may improve growth performance and carcass traits without compromising animal health. This study determined the...

Dietary Supplementation of Coriander Seed, Turmeric Powder and Black Pepper and Its Effects on Performance, Health, Carcass Characteristics and Economics of Broiler Chickens

A six-week feeding trial was carried out to examine how dietary coriander seed, turmeric powder and black pepper influence feed intake, growth, feed efficiency, blood parameters, carcass traits, meat acceptability and the economics of broiler production. Two hundred and forty day-old chicks were randomly allocated to f...

Effect of Dietary Inclusion of Rice Distiller Dried Grain with Solubles on Carcass Characteristic, Fatty acid and Meat Composition in Broiler Chicken

Background: The increasing demand for soybean meal has caused in a steep increase in its price. An alternative to replace soybean meal is still going on to improve net returns. Hence, incorporating the rice distiller dried grain with solubles (rDDGS) into poultry diets could replace the traditional protein-feed compone...

Effects of feeding a Bacillus-based probiotic on feed intake, performance, carcass traits, and health of crossbred beef cattle fed sodium monensin and high-moisture corn-based diets during finishing

Abstract This experiment evaluated feed intake, performance, fecal nutrient concentrations, health, and carcass traits of crossbred beef cattle offered a high-moisture corn-based diet containing sodium monensin. On day 0 of the study, 402 crossbred steers [initial body weight (BW) 329 ± 69.5 kg] were blocked by BW and...

Milk Yield, Nitrogen Use Efficiency, and Rumen Fermentation in Barki Ewes, and the Performance of Their Offspring in Response to Increasing Dietary Protein Levels.

This study investigated the effects of increasing dietary crude protein (CP) levels on milk yield, nutrient utilization, nitrogen use efficiency, rumen fermentation, and lamb growth in lactating Barki ewes. Twenty-one multiparous ewes (mean body weight (BW) of 40.5 ± 0.41 kg), each nursing one lamb (mean BW: 6.22 ± 0.1...
