Advancements and prospects in bioinformatics and omics for colorectal cancer: A dual bibliometric analysis of global trends and top cited publications

Sep 2026 · Journal of Intelligent Medicine · 0 citations · 35 references

Abstract

Bioinformatics and omics have been extensively applied in colorectal cancer (CRC) research, contributing to significant scientific advances. We conducted a dual bibliometric analysis integrating overall trends with influential literature to identify major developments and emerging directions in the field. This study retrieved bioinformatics and omics‐related articles in the field of CRC from the Web of Science Core Collection from 2004 to 2025 and the top 100 most cited publications. Using SCImago Graphica, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and RStudio, we analyzed and visualized data on countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, citations, references, and keywords. After restriction and manual screening, 5129 publications met our criteria. The publication output has steadily increased. China and the USA led in output, international collaboration, and institutional contributions. Keyword clustering and burst analyses highlight advancements and prospects, with burst detection indicating that topics related to machine learning and immunotherapy are emerging as key research areas. We conducted a dual bibliometric analysis of bioinformatics and omics in CRC. This study summarized the research progress of CRC heterogeneity, outlined the development direction of multiomics integration and combination with artificial intelligence technology, and explored the research hotspots of immunotherapy and the tumor microenvironment.
