Evaluated the chronic ecotoxicological effects of gasoline and diesel oil on the soil invertebrates Folsomia candida and Enchytraeus crypticus using Tropical Artificial Soil to demonstrate the importance of using multiple bioindicator species to improve environmental risk assessments in petroleum-contaminated tropical soils.
Abstract
Soil contamination by petroleum-derived fuels represents a significant environmental concern, particularly in regions with high densities of fuel stations. This study evaluated the chronic ecotoxicological effects of gasoline and diesel oil on the soil invertebrates Folsomia candida and Enchytraeus crypticus using Tropical Artificial Soil (TAS). Reproduction was used as the primary endpoint to assess sublethal toxicity across a range of concentrations. Both fuels caused significant dose-dependent reductions in reproduction for the two species, while survival remained unaffected. Effects were observed at the lowest tested concentration (0.00625 mL kg⁻¹), indicating high sensitivity of soil invertebrates to petroleum-derived contaminants. Enchytraeus crypticus exhibited greater sensitivity than Folsomia candida, and diesel oil showed higher toxicity at lower concentrations, whereas gasoline produced more pronounced effects at higher exposure levels. These findings highlight the ecological relevance of chronic ecotoxicological assays and demonstrate the importance of using multiple bioindicator species to improve environmental risk assessments in petroleum-contaminated tropical soils.
The ecological relevance of soil invertebrates in contaminated groundwater systems remains largely unexplored, particularly under chronic exposure to petroleum-derived compounds. Here, we provide the first evidence of stable colonization and functional persistence of the model collembolan Folsomia candida within a hydr...

Background. Oil pollution of soils is one of the most common forms of anthropo genic impact, leading to disruption of the functioning of soil ecosystems and a decrease in their biological activity. In this regard, it is an urgent task to develop and apply sensitive, informative and environmentally sound methods for ass...

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is frequently detected in freshwater ecosystems and continues to raise environmental concerns, particularly in regions where its use remains weakly regulated. While phytoremediation has been proposed as a low-impact strategy for pesticide removal from water, the capacity of many aquatic macrophytes r...
Soil contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons represents one of the most critical environmental challenges in oil-producing regions of Kazakhstan, where approximately 59% of total oil-related soil pollution is concentrated in the Atyrau Region, with the total area of contaminated land exceeding 194,000 ha.
